Launch of the Sarmiento TBM (Argentina)

Early July saw the launching of the TBM responsible for excavation in underground work for the Once-Moreno rail corridor
on the Sarmiento Line, Buenos Aires (Argentina). The official ceremony was attended by the Minister of Interior and Transport, Florencio Randazzo, while the COMSA EMTE entourage was led by Ramon Castro, director of the Group in Argentina.

The TBM, 150 metreslong, will remove soil while positioning the concrete rings that form the 10.4 metre diameter tunnel that the two tracks will pass through.

The machine advances 20 metres a day and consists of a rotating head and a series of equipment and systems that allow the removal of excavated material and the installation of concrete rings at the same time.

The project is currently in the first of three stages, involving the underground work for the double track between the Haedo and Caballito stations. The work, which was awarded in 2008 by the Transport Secretariat for the Ministry of Federal Planning, Public Investment and Services, will improve the quality of the rail service on the Sarmiento Line, as we published in May.
