Inauguration of the Malaga Metro, constructed and operated by COMSA EMTE

This morning saw the inauguration of the Malaga Metro, a project to improve mobility in the city, whose development has involved the investment of COMSA EMTE Concesiones and in whose construction various COMSA EMTE group companies have participated. The new suburban railway has two lines and 17 stations, twelve underground and five above ground, and a provisional route of12 kilometres, which will be extended to 14.8.

The project dates back to 2004, when the Regional Government of Andalusia awarded the construction and subsequent operation of the infrastructure to the concession holder Metro de Málaga S.A., of which COMSA EMTE Concesiones forms a part, together with the Public Works Agency of the Regional Government of Andalusia (AOPJA), FCC, Azvi, Sando, Vera and Cajamar.

Through this company, COMSA EMTE Concesiones has actively contributed to the development of the project, which has required an investment of 636 million euros, financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank. The operation of the passenger transport service will be carried out by Metro de Málaga S.A. until the end of 2042.

Construction works

Since the awarding of the project, several COMSA EMTE group companies have participated in the construction of the new suburban railway. Backed by its extensive rail experience, the group construction company, COMSA, was responsible for the construction of the track and catenary and also participated in the infrastructure civil works, including the construction of the stations, tunnels and structures.

For its part, the engineering company EMTE has carried out the electromechanical installations of the two suburban railway lines, in collaboration with Espelsa and Vimac. This work comprised the engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of catenaries, electrical substations, transformers, stairs, lifts and air-conditioning systems for the stations, and other facilities.

In the area of telecommunications, EMTE developed the control system for the stations, the TETRA network and the MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) data transmission system, which ensures greater safety and efficiency in data transfer. The Malaga Metro is the first suburban railway in Spain to use this innovative technology for the transmission of information.

The opening ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, and the president of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Susana Diaz.
