Aigües de Catalunya improves energy efficiency at the Martorell WWTP

Aigües de Catalunya, a company 50% owned by Aguas de Valencia and COMSA EMTE Environment, has implemented a project to improve the energy efficiency of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Martorell (Barcelona). The initiative is funded by the Agència Catalana de l’Aigua (ACA) and the Institut Català d’ Energia (ICAEN).

The company has in particular implemented a remote energy management system that reduces the energy consumption of the facility significantly and extends the life of electromechanical equipment. In its first year in operation, the energy consumption of the Martorell WWTP has been reduced by 8.6%.

The system is based on energy management software by the Circutor company that Aigües de Catalunya has adapted and modified to optimize treatment plants. This initiative is part of a programme promoted by the ACA to optimize energy consumption at wastewater treatment facilities in Catalonia.
