European project to reduce energy costs and water consumption in irrigation

On 3 and 4 December, Barcelona’s Science Park hosted the presentation of the European WEAM4i project (Water and Energy Advanced Management for Irrigation), driven by Adasa and Meteosim, the aim of which is to improve efficiency in the use of water and reduce the energy costs involved in irrigation systems.

The initiative plans to develop a smart network for interactive irrigation management that will ensure rational water and energy consumption based on demand, with the ability to optimise the available supply accordingly. An ICT platform will also be designed for service purposes, which will help in the decision-making process in terms of field irrigation. Thus, applying the WEAM4i system will help reduce water consumption by 6% and its associated energy cost by 15%.

The project will last three-and-a-half years, with a budget of 7.6 million euros, and is co-funded by the European Union. The consortium led by Adasa and Meteosim comprises 17 members from the sectors of business and research, irrigation associations and public bodies from Germany, Spain, France, Holland and Portugal.
